Sitges - the fantastic neighbour of Barcelona
The Spanish town of Sitges is a pearl on the Costa Garraf. It is located between Barcelona and Tarragona, so there are possibilities to combine active city holidays with relaxation.
Sitges started off as a fishing village. Those of you who get up early can still meet fishermen on the beach inspecting their catch. You can also buy fresh fish for dinner. The fishermen are still a vital part of Sitges. Otherwise, the city relies mainly on tourism as it has developed into a conference town. It also hosts an international film festival every October.
There are 17 official beaches in Sitges. Most of them are marked with a blue EU flag, indicating quality and safety. Gava Mar beach is absolutely beautiful.
If you get tired of all the sunbathing and swimming, you should visit San Bartolomeu Church with beautiful paintings and two Gothic graves or the Cau Ferrat Museum, where you will mostly find paintings from the Catalan artists Santiago Rusinol and Palau Maricel. This house was built by Charles Deering as a place for his personal art collection. Now it is open to public.
Speaking of museums: Sitges has its own Bacardi Museum. Don Facundo, who went to Cuba and developed Bacardi Rum, came from Sitges.
There is a lot of wine production around Sitges. The local wine tastes great and you can even visit the vineyards. The combination of good local wine and food turns your meals in Sitges into a great experience.
Sitges is also called the gay capital of Spain. It is a sophisticated getaway for gay and straight, families and friends, young and old.
